After an undetected heart condition claimed the life of 38-year-old Joe Lyons during the 2007 Cohasset Triathlon, no one would have blamed Joe's widow, Karen, if she distanced herself from the sport.
In fact, though she enjoyed an active lifestyle, Karen had never participated in a triathlon.
However, that tragedy two years ago actually drove Karen toward the sport, not only as a participant and active member of the multisport community, but also as an advocate for race safety. Ironically, in 2008 Karen, who resides in Newton, Mass., entered her first triathlon at Cohasset, where her husband had died just a year earlier. She has now completed five races, including the Cohasset Triathlon for a second time.

Registration is under way for the South Shore's first duathlon-a bike ride and run through the picturesque streets of Scituate that will include games, music and food throughout the day.
The race will begin at 10:15 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, and teams will be divided into elite and novice categories. There will be a youth race, a race for people with disabilities, and two- and three person relay races.
Friendship Home, a private organization in Hingham and Norwell that helps adult people with disabilities, is using the event to kick off a fitness program for its clients, who will have a team in the race.

Scituate — If everything goes according to plan, Scituate will host a race in October that will both draw visitors to local businesses and raise money for charities.
The proposed Scituate Duathlon would start on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 17, from Cole Parkway and include two running portions and a bicycling portion. As the course is now laid out, the running portions of the race would both start in Scituate Harbor. One leg of the race would lop around Second Cliff and the other would loop past Scituate Lighthouse.
The bicycle potion of the race would begin in the same location and move through Hatherly Road, Gannett Road, Country Way and the Driftway.
